GOT ANGUISH?
TBH: I would have to say that in my four years of playing pickleball, my guestimate is that 76.79% of players could use some “anguish chillout.”
Plain and simple: Anguish will NEVER help your game. It will only hinder it.
So what’s the answer?
RECOGNIZE when your anguish goes off the chart and dial it back down. The more you can begin to recognize it, the easier it will become to turn down the meter and learn to chillaxe more. Chillout, chillaxe, what the heck is this? Pickleball as Told By Spicoli?
“Wow! Like, pickleball, man? Really? WTF is that? I’m a surfer, bro.”
As always, bro, I want to recommend choosing a mantra (a word or a phrase) that you can repeat/think to yourself every time you RECOGNIZE you’re losing your cool.
Yes, it’s that simple: Note the anguish, inject the mantra, rinse and repeat. It is going to take some time to rewire the negative neurons, but once you do, you’ll be able to catch the anguish before it’s even close to the surface. When you get to that place, your game will take on a lighter touch, and I guarantee, be more effective.
If you truly want to play better pickleball, anguish is a large boulder standing in your path. And you can’t just blow it all up at once. It’s going to take some time chipping away at the stone. (Cue Aerosmith fans.)
Lastly, think about nurturing your game, not nagging. There are already too many nags in our lives to become our own.
